WEGO's mission is to make the outdoors accessible for all. A community-based venture that seeks to bridge the gap between inexperience and knowledge. It is for women with a passion in creative and/or outdoor pursuits who might lack the community or confidence to explore, both the outdoors and their own creativeness.

Our paths crossed with Olivia, the founder and we were inspired by her story and what she sought to create. In the spirit of encouraging and building one another up, we asked Olivia to write a few words to house in our Journal, to promote both herself and the WEGO venture.  We pride ourselves on being approachable and transparent and often the best way to get to know somebody and their values is by er... asking them.

Wild By The Wayside

Words and stories by Olivia, founder of WEGO.

I am, for the most part, just Olivia. I love people, I love stories, and I love nature. Often, I find that these things are found hand in hand, their interconnectedness inseparable. And if I’ve learned anything during my time on earth, it’s that the landscape of our lives is carved by our values and our deepest desires. Like glaciers, they wind their way through our hearts, spirits and minds and change the very lands below. Mostly, I’ve learned that a life lived in connection with nature is joyfully simple and one that only gets better when I share it with others.

There was always something missing. And in order for it to be missing, it had to exist in the first place. That’s how I’d describe my relationship to the wild. It was, of course, always within me—within all of us—but so easily forgotten beyond my younger and freer years of childhood.

For years, I’ve photographed beautiful places, watched the cycles of nature unfold and I’ve cherished conversations with people.  Because of this, I am now channeling my energy into WEGO, a community-based venture bridging the gap between inexperience and knowledge for women with a passion in creative and/or outdoor pursuits whom lack the community in which to learn those particular skills. Through walking groups, gatherings, and events covering a multitude of interests, I hope to create a safe and open space for women to learn, to share, and to grow.

But every now and then, I would catch small glimpses of joy. I would remember how to be happy. Often, it would be in the simple things. I would be sitting watching a sunset or out walking (which is something that I started doing solo in my late-teens) or find myself surrounded by, and in conversation with, a group of inspiring people.

Later, standing at the top of Aiguille du Midi and 3842m high, I gazed upon the impossible. Mountains upon mountains were covered in snow and ice and for the very first time, I felt like I was seeing the earth before me—the magnificence of a place still dominantly wild—and I felt euphoric.

Alongside WEGO, I work freelance in photography and writing whilst developing a film production company that seeks to educate and inspire young people to create films to a professional standard in the South West.

Creativity is an ever-unfolding road and one that I am thrilled, and sometimes afraid, to be on.
